ColorComm Conference 2018: Inspiring Insights and Key Takeaways from Day 1

Tricia Allen

Tricia Allen, our Managing Director, North America, is one our Orionite attendees at this year’s ColorComm Conference. She checks in with key takeaways, some great quotes, and her first “Aha moment” of the conference.

The Last Unicorn(s) of Silicon Valley presented by Lyft

Lyft executives shared how Lyft has embraced women of color in the workplace and provides an environment where they feel they can show up as their authentic selves.

The big Aha for me was that women of color think twice about how they do their hair, the color of their nails are and what they wear. They feel critiqued if they don’t “conform” to the company norms that they will not be taken seriously. Lyft, luckily, provides an environment of support and empowerment.

Takeaway: “Lift while you climb” we need to find ways to lift our peers and those around us up while we continue to move ahead.

ColorComm ConferenceHow to Get Into the C-Suite, Presented By Arnold W. Donald, CEO, Carnival Corporation

Great thoughts from Arnold:

  • Trust your instincts and intuition and own it even if you stand alone.
  • Focus on the work. Results results results. And you will get noticed for those roles.
  • Individually we are a drop, but together we are an ocean

Networking tips: Focus on building a relationship first. Don’t make networking so transactional. Don’t just network up, network laterally and focus on peer mentorship. We are all responsible for our own careers. Take charge.
Biggest takeaway: DNI is not about affinity groups. We need to lead by example. Affinity groups to check the box is not going to change anything.
