Orionites and Mobility: Maria Romero and Miami

Maria RomeroMaria Romero, Senior Manager, Client Finance, was enthusiastic about transitioning to a market where she could leverage her language skills. When she spoke to her supervisor about making the transition to Miami, her supervisor was impressed by her initiative and supported the move. Since moving to Miami, Maria has embraced the new environment and experience. We sat down with her to discuss how she made the transition happen.

Why did you request a transfer to Miami? Were your supervisors receptive to your request?

I really wanted to be part of the Orion expansion in Latin America by leveraging the knowledge that I gained at Orion during my seven years of experience. My proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese also helped me in the process. Coincidentally, my husband also had an opportunity to move to Miami and my supervisor simply told me to grab my laptop and make it happen!

How does the office culture differ between that of the Miami office and NYC?

The Miami office is much more a reflection of the Latin America culture, than [the United States]. The biggest difference is that you hear more Spanish and Portuguese than English in the office, even though everyone speaks English.

NYC is a multicultural city, but Miami became the business hub of Latin America. Several multinational companies have centralized their Latin America operations over here.

Have there been any benefits from this move that surprised you?

Definitely. I was supporting Latin America before, but I never imagined how my role would grow by moving here.
